What Is a Dental Crown?

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is restoration used to repair excessive decay or damage that may be too large to correct with a traditional dental filling. They are custom made to look and feel just like the tooth they’re restoring, so they blend seamlessly into your smile and are strong enough to enjoy a full diet. Best of all, they protect the underlying tooth from further damage, so as long as you continue caring for your oral health, your tooth should remain healthy and functional for years to come.

If you have a tooth with significant decay, damage, or infection, you may be an ideal candidate for a dental crown. These lifelike restorations can correct a variety of dental problems and can even be used in cosmetic repairs.

The Process of Getting a Dental Crown

The Process of Getting a Dental Crown

Getting a dental crown in Melbourne is easier than you might think. First, you’ll need to visit your dentist for a consultation. At this appointment, we’ll take impressions of the damaged tooth or teeth to send to the dental lab where your crown(s) will be created. Then, your dentist will remove the damaged enamel, reshaping your tooth so the crown will fit upon arrival. Next, you’ll be given a temporary crown to wear while your permanent crown is customized at the lab. Finally, you’ll return to our office in about two weeks once your restoration has arrived to have the temporary crown removed and the permanent one cemented in place.

Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

Damaged teeth can cause a lot more problems than just aesthetics or pain while chewing. If left untreated, they can eventually lead to tooth loss or the spread of infection to nearby healthy teeth.

Dental crowns were designed to not only restore the appearance of damaged teeth, but to also improve their comfort level and chewing capabilities.

Dental crowns prevent the damage in your smile from worsening, preventing the need for extraction.

Because these restorations are completely customizable, they can be color matched to your existing healthy teeth, making them virtually indistinguishable!  They’re also very easy to care for. Simply brush and floss them as you would with your natural teeth, visit your dentist every six months for your regular exams and cleanings, and avoid using them for anything too hard or crunchy like ice cubes and hard candies, and they could last for 15+ years!
